- Since the reform and open, as the labor moving from the rural areas to cities in large scale, a lot of Left-in women had appeared in rural area. Generally, they have great pressures both in economy and mentality. Their living conditions have become a easily-neglected and knotty problem in the new countryside construction.
- In order to improve the living condition of Chinese rural area and reduce the amount of migration from rural to urban areas. Recently, European union allocated 380 thousand Eur and other NGOs allocated 150 thousand Eur to China and started the 3-year-project “Indigo”.
- The "Indigo" project in Latin is INDIGO composed of the first letter of Intercultural Development In favour of ender Opportunities and also can be translated into Chinese "Blue." The traditional indigo dyestuff is made from the Chinese folk indigo plant which has a long history in civil of ancient China and is also closely related with peoples’ life in Sichuan, Guizhou and Hunan provinces. The calico printing of Indigo dyestuff only can exhibit her loveliness by repeated washing, drying in the sun. "Indigo" project will make the Chinese traditional culture and artistry play a role and reveal elegant demeanour; and finally help poor women in these areas to improve their living standards.
- In order to help the Left-in women overcome poverty and achieve prosperity by taking advantage of the traditional technological handcraft, European Union Aid appropriated 530 thousand Eur to “Indigo” project which is designed and supervised by Italian COSPE association. Shimenkan training process
The first promote training and research of INDIGO was launched in Shimenkan village, Weining County Guizhou Province from Feb 24th to March 4th,2010.
